Types of Equipment Appraisals

Desktop

Desktop appraisals put the responsibility on the owner or site manager to collect and report all necessary details required for the appraisal. This can include:

  • Original cost
  • Make
  • Model
  • Serial Number
  • Hours
  • Miles
  • Condition
  • Photos

While a desktop appraisal is less expensive than a site visit, it may be more time consuming if the above information isn't readily available. Depending on how much equipment is to be appraised, it may be a large commitment to collect this data, which may warrant a site visit by one of our skilled inspection specialists.

Site Visit

In a on-site visit, the appraiser will visually inspect the equipment, and collect data and photos. It's important to allow the appraiser full access to the facility so they can understand how the equipment is being used and maintained.

An on-site appraisal will likely take a few hours, so construction site staff may experience delays or interruptions while the appraisal is taking place. However, our staff will work expediently and cooperatively with your personnel to ensure minimal disruption to your operations.

Whichever appraisal type you choose, it's critical for the appraiser to have access to all information to complete a detailed report.

FAQs About Equipment Appraisals

How often do appraisals come in low?

Low appraisals do not happen often (less than 8% of the time according to Bankrate). If you feel your appraisal is low, you can renegotiate or get a second opinion.

What factors affect appraisal value?

Many things can affect the appraised value, such as:

  • Overall condition
  • Remaining life of the equipment
  • State of the economy
  • Value of similar machines/equipment
  • Potential repairs needed

How do you appraise equipment?

When appraising construction equipment and other heavy machinery, we mainly look at the condition it’s in. It would help if you could provide maintenance records for the machinery so we know if any parts have been replaced recently or what may need to be replaced soon. We also compare the condition to similar equipment in a new or used state. This helps us understand the market value of your equipment.

Why do businesses need an appraisal on their equipment?

There are many reasons a business needs to know the value of their machinery.

  • Using equipment as collateral (e.g. for a loan)
  • Buying or selling equipment
  • Insurance appraisals
  • Legal proceedings
  • Cost segregation studies
  • Non-cash charitable contributions
